Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritava Aashwasan (PMSMA)
The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan has been launched by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India. The program aims to provide assured, comprehensive and quality antenatal care, free of cost, universally to all pregnant women on the 9th of every month.
PMSMA guarantees a minimum package of antenatal care services to women in their 2nd / 3rd trimesters of pregnancy at designated government health facilities.
Also, the programme follows a systematic approach for engagement with private sector which includes motivating private practitioners to volunteer for the campaign; developing strategies for generating awareness and appealing to the private sector to participate in the Abhiyan at government health facilities.
Maternal Death Surveillance and Response
The MDSR system is a continuous cycle of
identification, notification, and review of maternal deaths followed by actions
to improve quality of care and prevent future deaths.
All the maternal deaths reported will be investigated, irrespective of the place of death i.e. at home, in facility or in transit; area of death i.e. rural or urban. Maternal death review process will be undertaken at two levels:
1. Community level
2. Facility level
In
addition, confidential review of cases of maternal deaths occurred at facility
will be conducted at state level by the expert members of Committee for
Confidential Review (CCR) to review the clinical line of management of cases.
LaQshya- Labour room quality improvement initiative
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched program ‘LaQshya’- quality improvement initiative in labour room & maternity OT, aimed at improving quality of care for mothers and newborn during intrapartum and immediate post-partum period.
LaQshya program will benefit every pregnant woman and newborn delivering in public health institutions. Program will improve quality of care for pregnant women in labour room, maternity Operation Theatre and Obstetrics Intensive Care Units (ICUs) & High Dependency Units (HDUs).
Following facilities are being taken under LaQshya initiative on priority:
All Government Medical College hospitals.
All District Hospitals & equivalent healthy facilities.
All designated FRUs and high case load CHCs with over 100 deliveries/60 (per month) in hills and desert areas.
Surakshit Matritava Aashwasan (SUMAN)
The Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan scheme is an initiative by the Central Government for Zero preventable maternal and newborn death i.e. through the Suman scheme the central government is committed to achieving the target of reducing maternal and infant mortality.
This initiative focuses on assured delivery of maternal and newborn healthcare services encompassing wider access to free, and quality services, zero tolerance for denial of services, assured management of complications along with respect for women’s autonomy, dignity, feelings, choices and preferences, etc.
The beneficiaries visiting public health facilities are entitled to several free services such as
• at least four antenatal check-ups
• six home-based newborn care visits.
• one checkup during the 1st trimester
• Iron Folic Acid supplementation
• Tetanus-Diphtheria injection
• other components of comprehensive ANC package
• at least one checkup under (PMSMA- Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan)
Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)
Janani Suraksha
Yojana (JSY) is a safe motherhood intervention under the National Health
Mission (NHM) being implemented with the objective of reducing maternal and
neo-natal mortality by promoting institutional delivery among the poor pregnant
women. The Yojana, launched on 12th April 2005, by the Hon’ble Prime Minister,
is being implemented in all states and UTs with special focus on low performing
states. JSY is a 100 % centrally sponsored scheme and it integrates cash
assistance with delivery and post-delivery care.

Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK)
Government of India has launched Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram (JSSK) on 1st June, 2011.
In view of the difficulty being faced by the pregnant women and parents of sick new- born along-with high expenditure on delivery and treatment of sick- new-born, Ministry of health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has taken a major initiative to ensure better facilities for women and child health services. It is an initiative to provide completely free and cashless services to pregnant women including normal deliveries and caesarean operations and sick new born(up to 30 days after birth) in Government health institutions in both rural & urban areas.
The following are the Free Entitlements for pregnant women:
• Free and cashless delivery
• Free C-Section
• Free drugs and consumables
• Free diagnostics
• Free diet during stay in the health institutions
• Free provision of blood
• Exemption from user charges
• Free transport from home to health institutions
• Free transport between facilities in case of referral
• Free drop back from Institutions to home after 48hrs stay
The following are the Free Entitlements for Sick newborns till 30 days after birth.This has now been expanded to cover sick infants:
• Free treatment
• Free drugs and consumables
• Free diagnostics
• Free provision of blood
• Exemption from user charges
• Free Transport from Home to Health Institutions
• Free Transport between facilities in case of referral
• Free drop Back from Institutions to home
